If you experience a Special Qualifying Event, you are able to change your health insurance coverage choices to any plan option and carrier of your choosing.
Example: You are enrolled in the Standard Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO BCBST single plan. Your spouse is terminated from his/her job. You add your spouse and children to your coverage and choose the Premier PPO, Cigna LocalPlus, employee+spouse+child(ren) plan. This is acceptable.
If you experience a life event (marriage, birth, adoption), you are able to change your coverage level (employee+spouse, employee+child(ren), etc.) to whatever you like, but you have to remain under the same carrier (BCBST or Cigna).
Example: You are enrolled in the Standard PPO, BCBST, single plan. You get married. You add your spouse to coverage and want to change to the Premier PPO, Cigna LocalPlus, employee+spouse+child(ren) plan. This is not acceptable.
Example: You are enrolled in the Standard PPO, BCBST, single plan. You get married. You add your spouse to coverage and choose to enroll in the Premier PPO, BCBST, employee+spouse plan. This is acceptable.
