If your school system provides dental coverage to retirees that is not one of the state-sponsored dental plans, you have the choice to enroll in the school system’s dental plan, one of the state’s dental plans if you meet the eligibility criteria of retiree dental, or a combination of the two. If you wish to enroll in both the school system and state plans, you should be aware of the coordination of benefits rules for both plans. Coordination of benefits rules determine the order in which the plans will pay benefits.
Full eligibility rules for retiree dental can be found at https://www.tn.gov/partnersforhealth/other-benefits/dental.html.
The Cigna Dental Health Maintenance Organization – Prepaid Provider Plan, coordination of benefits rules apply to specialty care only. For more information, please reference the Cigna DHMO Certificate of Coverage, found by navigating to www.tn.gov/ParTNersForHealth. From there, select Publications > Publications > Dental HMO – Prepaid Provider > Certificate of Coverage
If the MetLife DPPO benefit plan is primary, MetLife will pay the full amount of benefits that would normally be available under the plan. If the MetLife DPPO benefit plan is secondary to the other dental plan, according to the rules, MetLife will pay the benefits under this plan reduced by the amount of benefits paid by the primary dental insurance plan.
The rules that determine which plan will be primary, and which plans will coordinate with MetLife DPPO can be found in the MetLife Certificate of Coverage, by navigating to www.tn.gov/ParTNersForHealth. From there, select Publications > Publications > Dental PPO > Certificate of Coverage.
Please Note: Benefits Administration can only assist you with questions about dental coverage under the state-sponsored plans. For questions about other coverage, you will need to contact those plans or ask your former school system for assistance.
