You may enroll in coverage or add a newly acquired dependent for coverage when:
- A new dependent spouse is acquired through marriage: or
- A new dependent newborn is acquired through birth: or
- A new dependent is acquired through adoption, or placed into custody pending adoption,
- An employee becomes the legal guardian of a minor child that is also in the legal custody of the employee, only when the guardianship order requires the employee to provide insurance coverage for the child (only the employee and the newly acquired dependent may be added).
After a new dependent is acquired, you can choose health, dental and/or vision coverage. You can add coverage for yourself and also add the newly acquired dependent. If the newly acquired dependent is a new spouse, newly acquired step-children may also be enrolled in coverage. The request to enroll mid-year due to acquiring a new dependent must be submitted within 60 days of a new dependent’s acquire date. Please read below for important information about enrolling a newly acquired child.

The effective dates of medical coverage are as follows:
- Marriage –spouse and stepchildren coverage starts the first day of the month after the marriage and after Benefits Administration receives all necessary documentation
- Birth – coverage starts the date of birth only if enrollment and documentation is received within 30 days of the birth. If the application and required documentation is received by the ABC or BA 31 to 60 days after the birth, coverage will begin the first day of the month after the application/documentation is received.
- Adoption/Legal custody due to placement of adoption – coverage starts the date of adoption or legal custody due to placement for adoption if enrollment and documentation is received within 30 days of the event. If the application and with required documentation is received by the ABC or BA 31 to 60 days after the adoption or placement for adoption, coverage starts the first day of the month after the application/documentation is received.
- Guardianship-coverage starts the first day of the month after the enrollment and documentation is received by the ABC or BA.
Required Documentation for mid-year enrollment due to acquiring a new dependent:
- Marriage – copy of marriage certificate for spouse, and birth certificate of step-children
- Birth – copy of birth certificate (this can be the mother’s copy of the birth certificate from the hospital)
- Adoption/Legal Custody – copy of order of adoption or legal custody order for purpose of adoption.
- Guardianship. Copy of order making the employee the guardian of a minor child who is in the legal custody of the employee if the order requires the guardian to provide insurance coverage for the minor child.
