A special qualifying event that may allow you to enroll in coverage or add dependents to your coverage occurs in two situations: (1) when you or a dependent loses eligibility for coverage with another plan; or (2) when a new dependent is acquired.
All requests to enroll yourself or a dependent due to an SQE must be submitted no later than 60 days after the date of the SQE.
The effective date of coverage for the new enrollment will be the first day of the month after the request and all required documentation is received by the ABC or Benefits Administration, unless the SQE is acquisition of a new child by birth or adoption. If the SQE is birth or adoption of a child, the coverage will be effective from the date of the SQE if the request and all required documentation is received within 30 days of the SQE. If not received within 30 days of the SQE, a newborn or adopted child’s coverage will not start until the first day of the month following receipt of the request and all required documentation.
Regarding whether a person can make more changes if time is left in their enrollment period. If the coverage has gone into effect, and the enrollment period has ended, NO changes can be made. However, if time is remaining in the enrollment period, they can make a change, but it has to be prospective.
